Note: thoughtproject is an open blog that was started at Westwood High School as a social experiment.
I love reading the posts on thoughtproject. The writing is always excellent. It’s excellent, because the writing is so real, so uninhibited. The writers write about who they are, not who they want people to think them to be. Many times we write not our deepest thoughts and struggles but what society expects from us. We write about our life to look like who we’re supposed to be.
There are no pressures that shape the writing on thoughtproject. There are no moral obligations to fulfill. There are no self-esteem issues to cover. They stand there with their writing, naked and shivering.
When all is uncovered, the writing is powerful. It says, “This is who I am! I desperately want to be someone else, someone better, but this is who I am!” It is painful to admit who we are, even to ourselves.
When we admit these things, when we recognize who we really are, that is when true life may begin. Life never starts with strength; it starts as a helpless babe - naked and shivering.
