Chris’s posts are thought-provoking. I’m very ignorant in the field of religion. Can one still be Christian but refuse to partake in/hear of evangelism?
Hi ChanAn,
Wikipedia:
Evangelism refers to the practice of relaying information about a particular set of beliefs to others who do not hold those beliefs.
Note, evangelism is about relaying information, not about converting. Evangelism can be contrasted to proselytizing. Evangelism is about making the Gospel known so that people can hear about it and determine their own beliefs. Proselytism is about converting people. The worst example of proselytism would be the crusades, which were wrong and indefensible.
Why we evangelize in a nutshell:
We truly believe in the Gospel, have personally experienced its power, and want to share it. Some people feel a greater desire to than others. Basically what Kevin said.
Ellen brings up a good point. The way we live shows our faith as well, as actions speak louder than words.
Jooyeon is equally correct:
Jesus says, “Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.” However, again, no where does it say that it is our job to “convert.”
The bringing up of children in a religion is a more complicated story. However, there are many instances of a Christian-brought up child adopting another world view and many Christians from non-Christian homes.
I’m not sure if I answered your question.
